Dear Patricia,

If you have trouble viewing emails with images, please read the NewsPetter here.

Judging from numerous comments I've received, the new format for the NewsPetter is a hit. Rather than several articles, it's now a compilation of what's been going on, pet-speaking, around the state. Thanks again for "tailing along" with FloridaPets.net.

What's New?
Toby the pool boy

We need photos! If you'd like your companion animal featured as a Pet of the Week or maybe even in a future issue of the NewsPetter, please send us your name, the city where you live, a photo or two of your pet, and a few lines of information about him or her.

For you South Florida pet peeps, Sit, Stay, Speak is a great pet related blog written by Diane Lade, a reporter with the Sun Sentinel. Check it out and leave Diane some comments.

A triple bow WOW. Jacksonville, Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach have all passed a doggie dining ordinance.

Looking for something different for your jumping jack? Check out Southwest Florida Dog Diving, a group that has perfected the sport of dock diving.

A reader tells us dogs are allowed on the outdoor terrace of Food Glorious Food, located at 1950 Thomasville Road in Tallahassee.

I frequently get requests for information about dog leash laws in various cities and states. That information is now at our fingertips at Animal Legal & Historical Center.

One of our readers Bruce Cornely, is also a published author. Snuffer, The Lighthouse Beagle is now in its second printing! Check it out at Bruce and the Baskerbeagles.

People aren't the only ones displaced from their homes during financial storms. Four-legged souls suffer too. That's where the SPCA of Central Florida Society can help. A program they call F.A.I.T.H. allows families to turn their pet over to the SPCA for up to 30 days for safekeeping in foster care until they can get their lives back together. The program is free. Pets must be spayed or neutered and up to date on immunizations. If you know someone who might be helped by this program, please call (407) 351-7722 for more information.

Hyde Park Village in Tampa hosts events throughout the year. Most of them are pet-friendly. Check their calendar for what's on tap this winter.

One of our readers tells us a bill has been introduced in Congress for pet safety. Nicknamed "Buck's Bill" and formerly known as the Pet Safety & Protection Act, the bill helps to protect pets from Class B dealers who sell them to research facilities. You can read more about this here.

Did you know? The free discount prescription card provided by many Florida counties can also be used for pet medications if a vet writes the prescription and it's filled at a participating pharmacy, which includes most of them. If you don't yet have such a card, check with your county administration. Many are offered at public locations such as libraries.

There's a new dog park in Pompano Beach called the Dog Patch.

Another new dog park! The Gary B. Jones Park for People and Pups opened in September. It's located at 8100 Southgate Blvd., on the NW corner of University Drive and Southgate Boulevard, west of Tamarac's Memorial Veterans' park. The park offers 3.5 acres with a 13,000 square foot section for small dogs called "Wiggley Field" and a 1-acre area for large dogs called "Tam-A-Bark Run." There is also 9,000 square feet of common dog area and walking paths, multiple shelters, a drinking fountain for both humans and canines, a dog bathing area and plenty of parking. For more information, call (954) 597-3620.

If you've been thinking about using the new cocoa mulch, you may want to reconsider. Not only does it mold in humid climates - Florida! - it's made up of Theobromine and caffeine, both which are dangerous to pets.

Keeping your dryer vent cleaned out could save the lives of your pets. Dyer fires are increasingly common, but they can be prevented. Check your local Yellow Pages for dryer repair companies who can perform this kind of maintenance.

Have you heard about Doggie Dinghies? We haven't tried one yet, but our dogs have put it on their list for Santa Paws. Splash on over here and check them out.

And last, but not least, another freebie for you. Send for a Free Pet Rescue Sticker from the ASPCA to alert emergency workers of your pet's presence in your home so they can rescue them from fires and the like.

That's it for now. May you and yours have a lovely Thanksgiving holiday. ~ Patricia ~
