The Art of Communicating With Your Dog
“When most of us talk to our dogs, we tend to forget they're not people." ~ Julia Glass, Author
We dog owners all want to give our beloved pets the best lives possible, however, this isn’t always easy when the communication factor is missing. While we like to think that we understand what they’re thinking, the reality is that oftentimes we are guilty of misinterpreting the signals they are giving us.
Misunderstanding dog signals can have dangerous consequences for both humans and dogs. There have been many, many occasions where dog owners have misinterpreted the signs of aggression thereby putting themselves and others around them at risk. Therefore, it’s our responsibility to be aware of what makes our dogs tick, so we know how to react quickly in potentially hazardous situations.
So how can we be better dog owners? Fortunately, the guys at Greyhounds As Pets in Australia (GAP NSW) have produced a very useful infographic about how to “decode your dog.” This nifty graphic breaks down the ways dogs communicate their emotions by looking at their facial expressions, body postures, and barks.
