1. City Parks
In October 2018, the Destin City Council started a six-month pilot program that allows two city-owned areas — Mattie Kelly Park and Nature Walk and Kell-Aire Nature Walk (south) — to become on-leash parks. Original plans to allow dogs at only one Destin park was not appreciated by dog guardians, so the Council compromised. But dog people want the Council to add Main Street Park and turn the pilot program into a permanent one after the six-month trial period, which ends in April 2019.
2. Nancy Weidenhamer Dog Park
This is a Destin city-owned 3-acre facility with fenced areas for large and small dogs. It officially opened in January 2012 and was named in honor of its dedicated founder who passed June 24, 2018.
3. Henderson Beach State Park
Located on the beach in Destin, at 17000 Emerald Cost Parkway. Per the website above, dogs are not permitted on the beach, playgrounds, or inside buildings. Pets are permitted in the parking lot, on the nature trail and sidewalk in the day-use area of the park. There is a dog walk area in the park's campground area. Dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than 6-feet long. Take along plenty of fresh water for your dog and don't forget the doggie-doo bags.
NOTE: We can't visit every area on a regular basis, so if you have information about any dog parks, beaches, or any other animal recreation facilities in the Destin/Okaloosa County area, please contact FloridaPets.net.
