1. Yellow Green Farmers Market
A 100,000 square foot farmer's market with 300 under-roof booths, open Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Yes, pets are welcome here! (Added 3-18-11.)
No longer pet-friendly.
UPDATE of 04/10: Long ago, pets and people coexisted nicely on this Boardwalk. One day, non-pet people started complaining. City Commissioners then instituted a ban and a $50 fine for walking dogs at this location. Then, earlier this year, a proposal was initiated that would have allowed a 2-mile portion of the walkway to become pet-friendly and allow for dog walking and doggie dining. It was thought this would help bring more traffic to the businesses in that area. In late April, City Commissioners voted 5-2 against the proposal. If you were previously unable to make your voice heard on this issue, or if you'd like to voice your support once again, go here for contact information and more info.
2. Dog Beach of Hollywood
Located between Pershing and Custer Streets. This beach is now open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 5 to 9 p.m. EDT. There are fees. Check the web site given here for specifics. Visitors should enter the beach only at Pershing Street and sign in with the ranger on duty.
Note from Web Mistress: Dog guardians in Hollywood have struggled for some time to make this beach a reality. While trying to organize a small place for people to exercise with their dogs, they received much resistance from beachfront homeowners who curiously think they also own the actual beach. Despite the group having to jump through all kinds of hoops to make this dog-friendly area a reality, permission for the dog beach will be contingent upon a review every six months. So please, if you're going to visit this beach, follow the rules and don't make it even harder on those who worked to get a good thing going and don't give the naysayers any ammunition.
