Natural Cleaning Supplies Keep Pets Safe

By Kelli Gardener

We all have a variety of cleaning products in our kitchen cabinets. But what you may not know is these commercial cleaners are packed with chemicals and toxins. These toxic chemicals can do anything from exacerbating allergies to creating significant long term health issues.

These cleaners are not just harmful to us but also to the furry companions who share our homes. In fact, often, animals are more sensitive to chemicals than we are. As a result, using chemical based cleaners instead of natural alternatives can be harming our pets even more than they are harming our families.

With all aspects of our family's health at stake, we need to start thinking about how we can limit the harmful impact we have on our lives and the lives of those who share our home.

One way we can do this is by thinking about the benefits of natural cleaners.

In this article, you’ll learn about simple DIY cleaning products you can use to clean your house while keeping your pets safe. And about some natural cleaning products that won’t harm your furry friends that you can buy in stores.

Cleaning products to avoid

The first thing you need to do to protect your family and pets is have a dig around under the kitchen sink. Look at all the commercial cleaning products you currently use and throw away any that have the following ingredients listed on the label:

  • Phenols
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Formaldehyde
  • Phthalates
  • Bleach
  • Perchloroethylene

These are some of the most harmful chemicals that can be extremely harmful to your pets. By removing any products containing these ingredients, you’ve taken the first step to keeping your pet healthy!

Regular Vacuuming

Many of us suffer minor allergic reactions to pet hair. So it seems logical that regularly cleaning our homes will reduce allergies. However, commercial cleaners can often cause allergic reactions. This in itself is worrying, that these cleaning products are actually causing our immune system to react to something unnatural.

An easy way to control allergies instead of worsening their effects is regular vacuuming. This reduces the chance of an allergic reaction to stray pet hairs, and reduces the need for harmful commercial cleaners, keeping your house fresh and safe.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a great all-round cleaner that’s completely pet-friendly. One of baking soda’s best properties is that it’s odor absorbent. This makes it a perfect natural smell neutralizer. It can be sprinkled on spills or pet accidents to absorb the liquid and smell, keeping your home fresh.

If you mix baking soda with salt and hot water it makes a wonderful cleaner that can be used to scrub kitchen countertops and other hard surfaces.

Finally, mixing soda and lemon juice together gives you a natural foaming cleanser. This absorbs bad smells and leaves behind a lovely, lemony scent.

White Vinegar

When diluted with warm water, white vinegar makes a pet-friendly floor cleaner that removes stains and leaves no nasty chemicals in its wake.

By diluting white vinegar with water and putting it into a spray bottle you have yourself an all-purpose cleaner that can be used for all household surfaces. By adding lemon juice, you can replace the vinegar smell with lemony goodness.

Combining white vinegar and salt and soaking a wash rag in it will give you the means to remove stains from a carpet, whether it’s food or pesky pet stains.

Using the same mixture as the white vinegar carpet cleaner but adding borax into it, you will have yourself a more heavy duty carpet cleaner. But don’t worry, Borax is still completely natural and pet safe.

Supplementing borax into your cleaning regime instead of bleach, you can continue to clean with great results while keeping the whole family safe from chemicals.
