Profile
Dogs are not permitted on Boca Raton area beaches. The fine for doing so is $83.
Note: In the summer of 2010, one of our readers told us people do take their dogs to a spot just north of the Boynton Beach Inlet, on the west side of the bridge. But given the pet-unfriendliness of this area, we would advise caution before visiting this area with your dog.
Formerly, an area on the beach off A1A in this area, called Dog Beach, was open to dogs, but in early 2004 the Palm Beach County Commission voted to ban dogs at that location. Readers have been encouraged to go to Jupiter where dogs are welcome and there's convenient parking and poop scoop bags.
Dr. John Pacy, a veterinarian in Palm Beach County formed a group in 2008 called Beaches Are for K9s Too, Inc. (BARK) to act as a political action committee. This committee will work to amend the current ban on dogs on the beach and establish a few dog friendly beaches in Palm Beach County where taxpayers/dog lovers can take their dogs for recreation. A petition drive is currently underway to get the issue before the county commission and on to the November 8 ballot for a possible referendum vote, if necessary. YOU CAN HELP. Go to BARK and print out and sign the petition. Please see the Web site for more info on how you can help collect signatures or make donations to the group.
